Radiation Oncology Corner
Social Media in the RO Community
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Miriam A. Knoll, MD, a radiation oncologist at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. We discussed the topic of social media and its importance in the field of radiation oncology. Despite its significant impact on our field, many have been slow to adopt social media as a tool. Knoll has been very successful in using it, and has valuable insights into the topic. Follow Miriam A. Knoll, MD on Twitter @MKnoll_MD and on Instagram @Dr.Mimi.K.

Four Reasons to Use Social Media
Everyone knows social media is the place to find cute cat pictures and laugh-out-loud memes. But it’s also a space where serious discussions unfold and true interpersonal connections are cultivated — as many radiologists can attest.

Getting the Word Out
With health care becoming increasingly consumer driven, how do you market your practice to both patients and referring clinicians?
The tiny town of Lovettsville, Va., boasts a population of 1,801 — only one of whom is a general practitioner. Because of the town’s size, campaigns for preventative health practices such as mammography were scarce. Until, that is, one of the residents was diagnosed with breast cancer.

An ACR Ed Center faculty member shares her experience adding social media to her most recent course.
April 2015
I started using Twitter for professional interests in October 2014, and in a relatively short time I have become a huge fan and advocate of Twitter for radiologists. I have enjoyed many benefits that enhance my role as an academic neuroradiologist. Since some of my regular tweets include educational content, I had the idea of using Twitter at the ACR Education Center Neuroradiology course to supplement attendees’ learning and share the classroom experience with other radiologists on Twitter.

Are you monitoring your online reputation?
By the end of 2014, Internet users will total more than 3 billion worldwide.1 This digital revolution has affected health care — particularly radiology, a specialty relying on technology — in many ways.
Front and Center
Twitter-savvy radiologists use social media to uncover pro-patient solutions.
Providing valuable care to patients has always been a tenet of medicine. Because value means something different to everyone in health care — patient, doctor, and administrator — physicians must strive to create patient-based care that adheres to everyone's needs.

The Speed of Innovation
Mobile radiology apps are evolving at the speed of imagination — but can regulators keep up?
Apple's iPhone kicked off the mobile device revolution just five years ago, and now there are well over a million apps in existence. Tens of thousands of these apps are designed to either improve or maintain user health, doing everything from measuring blood pressure to monitoring a patient's adherence to certain medical treatments.
